New York’s food scene is about to get a little Italian: legendary Florentine sandwich shop All’Antico Vinaio (which translates to “old wine merchant’s”) comes to town with a permanent location on 8th Avenue and 46th Street.

The store had made a cameo appearance on this side of the Atlantic in June 2019, when Tommaso “Tommy” Mazzanti, a member of the family that opened the Florentine storefront in 1989, installed a pop-up in the front room of Otto Enoteca e Pizzeria (now permanently closed) in Greewich Village. The short-term effort was greeted with great enthusiasm by diners in New York.

Fast forward two years and Mazzanti has teamed up with Tanya Bastianich Manuali and Joe Bastianich to open the new 1,500 square foot space with standing spaces for about a dozen people just off Times Square. It is said in the street that a real dining room will soon open next door.

The menu is full of the kinds of sandwiches that have won fame from all four places in Florence and one destination in Milan. From the classic Caprese (mozzarella, tomato and basil) to La Broadway (pistachio cream, stracciatella, sundried tomato, spicy zucchini and arugula), La Dante (capocollo, stracchino, truffle cream and arugula), La Favolosa (sbriciolona, pecorino cream, artichoke cream, spicy eggplant) and the Inferno (porchetta, nduja cream, grilled vegetables and arugula), all offerings are made with Italian cheeses, meats and spreads.

Sure, New Yorkers love their sandwiches, but there’s just something about these Italian paninis that are sure to add to the city’s overall scene. A quick glance at the display case where all the ingredients are displayed: the Tuscan prosciutto! Stracciatelle! Fior di latte balls! – will highlight the superiority of the new gastronomic effort. There’s a reason Italians are known for their stellar cuisine, after all.
